New Eligibility Standards in place for Class of 2016 12/12/12 - 11:57 AM
By Fred O’Brien
December 12, 2012
The NCAA has recently adopted a new set of freshman-eligibility standards for the potential college bound athlete who will be entering college on or after August 1, 2016. These new standards are being adopted to drive the emphasis more toward academic preparedness for college rather than just becoming eligible to play and practice as a freshmen. The higher standards are in place starting with the freshman class that entered high school as of August 2012 and all classes entering high school thereafter. These higher standards drastically change the way the college-bound student-athlete must approach their 4 years of high school.
The first change that jumps off the page is that the minimum GPA has been raised from 2.0 to a 2.3. This essentially means that a “C” or 75 average is no longer acceptable as minimum to play in college. The student-athlete will now be required to attain and maintain a minimum “C+” or 78 average for all of their 16 core courses across their 4 years of high school. In addition to the GPA requirement 7 of the first 10 core-courses taken must be in English, Math and Science. These 10 courses must be completed before the student-athlete starts their 7th semester of high school (e.g. Senior Year). The courses become “locked-in” for the purposes of GPA calculation at this point.
